Team Preview:

With three starters back from last year's 15-8 squad, the Kellogg Wildcats are hoping the experience gained from last season's trip to state, in which the Wildcats reached the semifinals before finishing fifth, will translate into more success this year.

Back for Kellogg are Gus Colburn, a 5-8 senior guard and an all-Intermountain League selection last year, and Tucker Gust, a 6-3 senior forward and an all-IML pick last year as well.

Also back are Heath Waechter, a 6-3 senior forward; Dominic Easley, a 6-1 junior guard; Ryan Martin, a 5-6 junior guard; Caleb McDonald, a 6-2 junior forward; and Toby Colburn, a 6-1 sophomore forward.

Key losses from last season include guard Jesse Lambert, a 90-percent free-throw shooter and a 45-percent 3-point shooter; and forward Chrishtian de Young, a versatile player and strong rebounder.

"We have a very good point guard in Gus Colburn and two talented forwards in Tucker Gust and Heath Waechter," said Jeff Lambert, in his fifth season as Kellogg boys coach. "We like to run the fast break, but we can slow it down and play inside or outside."

As for defense, the Wildcats have "athletes that will get after it on defense," Lambert said. "We will have a deep team that will play tough defense for 32 minutes."

The key to the season, Lambert said, is "everybody staying healthy, and how a couple of young players fit in."

Lambert said he'd like to see Idaho go to three officials instead of two.

"I believe we are the only state that does not use three officials," he said. "I believe it cleans the game up, and makes for far better basketball."

Asked why he coaches high school basketball, Lambert responded, "I had always wanted to coach since my playing days, more than a few years ago. So when I was given the chance 10 years ago I did not pass it up."

And as for what makes his school the best place to coach for, "Three generations of my family have graduated from Kellogg, so I have been involved with Kellogg basketball for a long time," Lambert said. "I would like to see Kellogg return to their glory seasons of the late 50s and early 60s."

Kellogg won state boys titles in 1955, '56, '59 and '64.
