Team Preview:

By Chris Langrill

Mountain Home's boys basketball program made some huge strides last season.

The Tigers won their first game at the state tournament since 1980 and finished third after losing to eventual champion Rigby. That's a pretty big improvement for a team that had gone 0-20 and 6-17 the previous two seasons.

The question this season is whether they can build upon that momentum.

"I'm excited about the experience this team brings to the court this year," said head coach Brion Bethel Sr., who was named the 4A SIC coach of the year last season.

Bethel didn't name names, but it's a lock that one player he's excited about returning is Jymon Garretson. The 5-foot-10 senior guard was honored as a first-team, all-conference player last season. Junior AJ Woodruff was an honorable mention the previous season.

While there are plenty pieces of the puzzle returning, one big piece from last year's squad is absent: 6-10 post Jarek Schetzle was a senior last season.

"We will miss his size and defensive presence," Bethel said.

One way to overcome a size deficit is to counter with quickness. The Tigers should be OK in that area this season. We have lot of overall team speed and we will be able to get out and run, Bethel said. And while Bethel thinks his team has some talented shooters, he thinks there is one area that definitely can be improved upon.

"We didn't shoot the ball well from the 3-point line last year," he said.

Defensively, Bethel thinks his team's quickness will allow him to try to force some turnovers.

"We will be able to get out and pressure the ball full-court for the entire game," Bethel said.

So, the talent is there for Mountain Home. The experience, too. It will be interesting to see if the team can continue trending upward. One thing is for sure. Bethel knows Bishop Kelly will be at least one of the teams standing in Mountain Home's way.

"They are the state runner-up, and they return most of their impact players from last year," Bethel said
