After a four-year run as state champions at the 1AD2 classification, the Dietrich Blue Devils fell just short last season, with Richfield taking home the title with a 48-41 victory at the Ford Idaho Center.

But what a memorable season it was for everyone involved with the team, including Head Coach Acey Shaw.

The group was featured on ESPN as part of the E60 series, highlighting how Shaw has overcome the odds to help lead the Dietrich girls back to the state championship on an annual basis.

“It’s hard to explain, but they [ESPN] did a good job of making it feel like they weren’t even there,” said Shaw. “It was good for our community and good for the team. There have been people from all across the country who have supported us. A great experience for the girls, me and the community.”

A new season brings new challenges and opportunities for the Blue Devils, with the best player in school history, Acey’s daughter Jacey, now graduated.

The opportunities will come for those who try to replace the scoring and leadership abilities Jacey provided.

“We’re going to miss her scoring power outside, but if girls work hard we can develop,” stated Shaw. “She is not replaceable. A definite leader on the floor. It’s going to be different, but good. If we have a good outside-inside game we will be tough.”

That inside-outside game will be led by seniors Katee Hubert and Nicki Larson.

Hubert is a dominating presence on the interior, while Larson is a strong distributor who can also score when needed.

“The inside game is going to be a huge advantage for us,” said Shaw. “Inside game is great and we are developing outside game to get better. Everybody is going to have to step up and play.”

Shaw is excited about the group he has in place.

“It is a great opportunity for me to be a part of what they are going to make of it,” he stated.

Expect Dietrich to again be a major factor in the 1AD2 title talk, with Hubert and Larson leading the way along with fellow seniors Caitlyn Dilworth and Mesa Heimerdinger.
