The Moscow Bears managed a 2-17 season under now second year Coach Jason Uhrig. Feeling much better about this group, the system, and the direction, Coach Uhrig is focused on having a cohesive team that will play and battle together and for each other.

Five players are returning to the Bear roster this season. They may not have much size, but the unit is very athletic and play well together. The returners are going to be led by First Team All-Inland Empire League selection in senior guard Glen Gosse. Gosse will be setting the stage and leading the way doing whatever he needs for this team to be competitive and have opportunities to win. Joining the guard returning this season will be guards Cooper Stephens (junior guard), Peyton Broenneke (junior guard/post), Hunter Pickard (senior post), and Nate Davis (senior post). With a solid five returning, they are set to be competitive this season. They will be joined by senior guard newcomer Chandler Miller.

The Bear message is clear- “Play together, not for the individual and accept your role for the betterment of the team,” stated Coach Uhrig. “This group has played a lot of ball together and have a great understanding of each other’s strengths.”

Everything with this team must take place at practice. This season, the Bears need to compete and battle in practice and understand that they are making each other better. Even though they have been playing together for a long period, they still need to improve their communication and make sure they are on the same page every possession. If they communicate, Coach Uhrig believes decision making will improve and his team with value each possession more.

There is speed at every position with this team. That will help allow the perimeter defense to put more on-ball pressure. Due to not having a ton of size, the pressure will be needed to keep entry passes out of the key. Uhrig believes the recipe to success lies right there. With the speed, come opportunities-turnovers, forced bad shots, rebounding, steals and deflections, which all can lead to easier scoring opportunities on the other end.

Uhrig believes pressure will lead into their offensive strength of being solid perimeter shooters. The depth and ability with this unit will allow teammates to step up for their buddy when he is having an off night. If they each make solid decisions with the ball and smart shot selections, the Bears should be in good shape this season.

In the Inland Empire League, Moscow must defeat Sandpoint and defending league champs in Lakeland. To make a run at the District title and get a berth to State, Moscow will need to play as a cohesive unit and find a way to defeat Lakeland. Look for the Bears to have opportunities to succeed this season and improve on their two wins from a season ago.
