Team Preview

The Skyline Grizzlies girls basketball team didn’t post the best record in 2015-16 under first year head coach Ty Keck, but they are trusting the process of rebuilding the program: they want to strive for excellence.

After winning only four games last season, the Grizzlies are seeking to build on the foundation that was set last season. It’s a young cast of characters this season, but Keck sees the advantages to it.

“I’m excited about the youth on our team because they are hungry to learn,” he said.

Returning to the team this year are forwards Halli Olson and Brittany Dennert along with guard Erin Jenkins. They are joined by junior guards Payton Bird and Megan Huntsman and freshman guard Macy Olson, whom Keck referred to as impact players.
However, the Grizzlies will be without the services of now-graduated star Rylee Jensen, who did it all for Skyline a year ago.

“Rylee was one of the best all around players in the area last year. She had the skills to make coaches game plan just for her,” Keck said.

The team will have to find more balanced scoring now that Jensen is gone. Keck believes the key to it is looking down on the blocks.

“We need to work on getting the ball inside the paint,” he said. “We have a strong presence and good size inside with Brittany Dennert, Annalise Cheret, and Allison Falk.”

Keck also added that his team will need to improve in their ability to find and hit open shots.

Defensively, the Grizzlies hope to use their size to improve in the rebounding department this year. Keck feels his team should match up well with their opponents.

“We have a lot of length and can match up with our speed as well” he said.

Keck added that a lot of their success will depend on how quickly the Grizzlies can adjust to the speed of the varsity game.

“We have six girls that are getting their first taste of varsity experience. They have a large learning curve ahead of them,” he said. “But watching young athletes grow and mature in such a short time is one of the greatest aspects of coaching this great game. I love the constantly changing challenges that this game provides.”
