Team Preview

In the middle of the Dietrich run of state championships it looked like no other team was going to be able to take the Blue Devils off the throne. Then came Richfield.

Back-to-back state championships of their own for the Tigers and Head Coach Buck Hendren have come against virtually all odds each time.

The first state title came with a six player rotation and the second one came after a regular season in which Richfield fell six times, although the tough regular season schedule primed the group for the three day journey that was the 1AD2 state tournament.

At the end of the day it was a great final showing for a senior class featuring Mariah Lezamiz, April Wood, Brittney Buckner, Taylor King, Jade Williams and Hannah Walker.

So you could say with all the losses it isn't shaping up to be another repeat for the Tigers, but that would feed right into the storyline here. They don't play the odds in Richfield. When things are stacked up against them they somehow find a way to win.

Two strong guards return in Torie King and Gloria Kent, while a large sophomore class now has the opportunity to shine alongside of them.

"I'm most excited to see how far we can progress as the season goes on," said Hendren. "There is a youth movement in Richfield with only one senior and no juniors. We need to learn on the run and improve every day."

To no surprise of conference opponents, the Tigers will once again provide high pressure on defense as they hope to force turnovers and get easy transition buckets.

Hendren had a short and sweet way of describing it.

"High pressure, high intensity defense."

With that said, the team has to be smart in knowing which teams also want to dictate the style of the game.

"Control the tempo of the games. We cannot let teams that want to run for 32 minutes get away from us," said Hendren.

The success of this team will depend heavily on how well the sophomores and freshmen adjust to varsity basketball. If they can learn quickly this could yet again be a big contender in the 1AD2 classification.
