With a new season comes a new look. For the Lewis County Eagles, Coach Monty Moddrell with assume the reigns of the Head Coach this season in his first year in that role. Last season, he was an assistant with this program. The Eagles and Coach Moddrell are returning 7 out of 16 starters this season, 3 on offense and 4 on defense.

A major loss for this team from a year ago was the graduation of quarterback Ryan Heideman and his playing making ability with his feet. The new look for the Eagles will come in the form of a substantial number of incoming freshmen and sophomores who will need to fill many of those offensive spots. Coach Moddell is “excited to see who can step up to contribute and bring the attitude and energy to make plays at the varsity level.”

The offense will be led by tailback Gerry Fischer. Fischer was a 2nd team All-League selection a year ago will assume the role of the primary ball carry and look to get the ground attack going for the. Also returning as a starter and anchoring the offensive line is Mitchell Barnett at center, who will supply the leadership and be responsible for opening the holes for Fischer.

With only 3 starters returning, the Eagles will be looking for an identity. They will be looking to Fischer to establish that identity and, as a team, eliminate mental errors that were drive killers a season ago. Coach Moddell wants to see fewer penalties, missed assignments, and turnovers and more opportunities to keep drives alive and score more points.

Defensively, the strength looks to be that of the defensive line where all 4 returning starters play. Anchoring the line will be defensive end Daniel Brashear. Brashear looks to take the pressure off his young, new, and inexperienced secondary by disrupting the flow early for the opposition. It will not be an easy task, but the front four will be busy following Brashear. The line will be called on throughout the season to make the big stop. With a young secondary, Coach Moddell said they must eliminate the big plays and keep the opponent in front of them.

With a large number of inexperienced and young underclassmen, it is important to get off in the right direction quickly. The opening game of the season comes at home against Kootenai who must make the long travel to Craigmont. Two important games loom in week 3 and 4 as the Eagles will host the Kendrick Tigers and follow that up with a trip to Deary, both teams represented the conference in the 1A D2 playoffs and Deary finished runner-up in the title game. In both games last season, the Eagles were held scoreless.

The new look Moddell-led team will face many obstacles this season with many young and new faces. They will be looking to learn the system and schemes as quickly as possible trying to mesh early. In order to have a successful year, they must find an offensive identity and eliminate opposing big plays.
