Making it to a state championship is always an accomplishment that will be remembered forever, but for the Bishop Kelly Knights last season that 50-49 loss to Skyline was a heartbreaking end to what was a memorable year.

Coming back from an 11-1 campaign, Head Coach Tim Brennan enters year 22 on the sidelines with the task of replacing what was a highly esteemed senior class from a year ago. He’ll have to find a way to duplicate the backfield productivity of Ben Hruby, the overall line presence of Raoul Johnson, Ben Kang, Gunner Kukay, Joe Senn, Jake Stone and Dillon McCurry, along with Vince Sengelmann’s abilities on both side of the field at the wide receiver and defensive back positions.

In case you didn’t notice, that’s a lot of linemen to replace, no easy task for any school.

Fortunately for Bishop Kelly they have done this a time or two. When one senior class exits, you better bet Brennan has the Knights ready to make a run the next year regardless of who was lost.

All the losses though opens the door for the question, who returns?

The defense should be the strong point yet again, with 3-year starter Rex Irby back at defensive back after earning First Team All-Conference honors last year. He’ll lead the group of quick, ball-hawks that tackle well and will be benefited by a front seven that will generate a strong pass rush.

Logan Hobbs was also honored for his efforts in the defensive backfield and is back this year, while Max Murphy will see an increased role that he should be ready to take full advantage of on the defensive line.

Offensively the Knights will go as far as what will be a virtually entirely revamped line can take them.

Along with Murphy, Noah Meyers and Jeremy Webb are each expected to get a heavy workload up front.

Behind that line a new-look backfield including quarterback Carter Wahl and running backs Cameron Foley and Khalil Forehand will go to work leading a team that looks to have plenty of speed.

Brennan listed newcomers in the receiver core such as Kendrick Brasby, Conner Wittmuss, Brian Bodin, JJ Sabala and Logan Hibbs as some options that could make an impact.

The experienced coach is most excited to see how this group of 2017 seniors grows and leads. Depending on how the progression comes along, this could be another year where BK is in the conversation for a 4A state title.

The Knights get their title hunt started on August 25 at Kuna.
