The American Falls Beavers will turn to a new face to lead their program in 2017.

The school just off of I-86 hired current wrestling coach and former football assistant coach Jim Giulio to take over the reigns of the Beavers program. Giulio, who has coached the football team at American Falls on-and-off over the last 10 years, replaces Tony Cade, who accepted the head football coaching job at Burley.

Giulio’s job is to now build on the success that Cade had over the last two seasons and to try to help propel the Beavers past the first round of the 3A playoffs – something that they have not accomplished since 2008.

The team has a number of seniors to work with, including two-year starting quarterback Boone Giulio. Joining him in the backfield will senior running back Russell Adkins and sophomore running back Wyatt Kearn. Don’t be surprised to see senior Luis Cervantes get some reps in the backfield as well.

Senior tight end Cameron Henesh will be a primary target for Giulio, who will be protected up front by senior center James Ramsey, left tackle Branden Boyer and right tackle Corrben Boyer.

The new head coach said that while his team has some noticeable strengths, it’s certain weaknesses that end up becoming a detriment to those strengths.

“I feel that we have a strong running and passing attack,” said Giulio. “But we hope to improve on our overall team discipline and team chemistry.”

The theme of improvement continues on the other side of the ball. Defensively, Giulio said that discipline, team chemistry, and also team tackling were areas that his team needs to improve on.

“We have a group of strong players and we need to focus on each player taking care of his own backyard and focus on team tackling,” he said.

That focus on team tackling will be immediately tested during the opening week of the football season, when the Beavers travel to Aberdeen to take on their cross-dam rivals in the annual ‘War of the Reservoir’. American Falls will then host state semifinalist Kimberly at home on Sept. 1 before hitting the road for two straight weeks when they play at Filer on Sept. 8 and at Soda Springs on Sept. 15.

American Falls will play at home for three of their final four games of the regular season, facing off against Battle Mountain, Nevada on Sept. 22, Declo on Sept. 29, and conference-foe Marsh Valley on Oct. 20. The Beavers will take on their other conference opponent, Snake River, on the road on Oct. 13.

Giulio says to watch out for not only the Snake River game, but the entire conference schedule.

“The team that plays with the most desire is our X-factor to success this season, especially with how evenly matched each team is in our conference,” he said. “I feel that how we play against Snake River will more than likely tell us where we are sitting in the state playoff brackets.”

If the Beavers can gel together as a team and stay injury free, they may be able to make some noise in the South East Idaho Conference and unseat perennial contender Snake River from atop the throne.
