After a year of playing about as young as any team in the 5A classification, the Centennial Patriots hope to see the payoff from that in the 2017 season.

One of the bright spots for the Patriots last year was running back and middle linebacker Victor Ngalamulume.

Offensively the unit will need to see big production from Ngalamulume as he runs behind an offensive line led by senior Chad Bowcutt.

"We played very young last season so we believe experience and maturity will help us," said fourth year Head Coach David Koch.

Keeping defenses honest between run and pass more this season will be crucial.

"We want to be more balanced in our offense," added Koch.

One of the big things that could make this group of Patriots more competitive than has been the case the past couple of seasons is the varsity experience that has simply not existed recently.

Koch is looking forward to seeing his upperclassmen step into big leadership roles.

"This group of seniors have been in our system since they were freshmen and it will be exciting to see how they have grown as student athletes."

Perhaps the biggest key for Centennial when it comes to having a successful season will be finding the best options out of the second and third stringers.

"We need to develop depth and stay healthy to be competitive," added Koch.

While the three wins last year tripled that total from 2015, there is still a lot of work to do for the Patriots to continue moving up in the 5A SIC.

The difference will really be how well the team is able to compete against teams such as Kuna, Timberline and Borah. Last season showed that for the most part Centennial was close to getting over the hump and getting wins in those games, falling to Timberline and Borah by just a combined six points.

Koch and the Patriots get 2017 started with a road affair at Meridian on August 25.
