Team Preview:

It was a season of streaks for the Valley Vikings in 2017, rolling off six consecutive wins to begin the year before falling in the final four games of the season, including a pair of two-point defeats.

The end result of a first round playoff exit wasn’t exactly the finish the team had in mind after such a hot start, but with quarterback Jason Hardy and receivers Zane Mussmann, Nic Anderson and Alex Korom all returning, the group should have an opportunity to make some more noise this season.

Hardy was a First Team All-State selection last season after throwing for 1,941 yards, rushing for 886 and combining for 34 total touchdowns.

With Second Team All-State honoree Mussmann back as Hardy’s go-to target, this could be the most explosive offense in Hazelton since the 2015 state championship team.

Kodi Burk has graduated, leaving a gap in the backfield that is expected to be primarily filled by Zach Gomez.

A fast-paced offense which utilizes multiple formations should have opposing defenses on their heels all season long, with the key to success coming down to if the unit can stay healthy.

It’s much the same story on defense, where Collin Tverdy returns to anchor the line after earning Second Team All-State honors as a sophomore.

Jacob Schilz and Brandon Stoker are a couple other faces who will see time in the rotation at defensive line, while Hardy and Mussman make their impact from the defensive backfield and linebacker positions, respectively.

Valley runs the 2-2-4 defense and will be looking to create more turnovers and long yardage situations for opposing offenses.

Third year head coach Ryon Jarvis is excited about the core of upperclassmen he has ready to lead his team this year.

“We have a good group of senior leaders,” said Jarvis.

After opening with Rockland, an early season test for Valley in week two will take place from a neutral site in Middleton against defending 1AD1 state champion Prairie. The matchup should tell us quite a bit about the complexion of the classification this season.
