Centennial had some hard-luck in the 2017 season, losing by one point to Meridian and Timberline and by a touchdown to Eagle. With a couple bounces here or there the Patriots could have been a five win playoff team, leaving the group hungry as it enters the new year.

Highlighting the returners is quarterback Dayne Koch, an Honorable Mention All-SIC selection last season. Brian Birrell, Charlie Faraimo and Caden Clark are some of the leading receiving options for the senior signal-caller.

Koch threw for 1,742 yards and 13 touchdowns last season, but also threw 15 interceptions. For the Patriots to take the next step, the team will need to cut down on the turnovers after having the second worst turnover differential at -11 of anyone in the 5A SIC last year.

“We have experience at key skill positions. We are young and inexperienced on the line,” said head coach David Koch.

Mason Denton is the most experienced returner on the offensive line, as the guard enters his senior campaign.

For the group up front, paving holes for whoever replaces Victor Ngalamulume will be a big priority. The departed back led the Patriots on the ground with 718 yards and 11 touchdowns a year ago.

On the defensive side of things, Centennial has the most experience coming back in the secondary, but is relatively young on the line.

Faraimo and Birrell lead the way from their safety positions, with Clark set to take a cornerback spot. Damon Trafford and Denton are players to watch in the linebacker unit.

There are plenty of reasons for optimism with the players who are returning on each side of the ball.

“We have several players that have been starting or playing significant reps on varsity for the past two years. We are excited about the improvement and leadership they can bring to this year’s team,” added coach Koch.

It will again be a major challenge in a new-look 5A SIC where each team plays each other once. Centennial gets it season started with a Thursday night matchup against Boise at Dona Larsen Park. That game will be broadcast live and free on IdahoSports.com.
