The Nampa Bulldogs along with the Columbia Wildcats will make the leap from the 4A Southern Idaho Conference to the 5A Southern Idaho Conference (Pod A) to kick off the 2014-15 season. Like Columbia, Nampa also went through a coaching change in the off-season and promoted two-year assistant, Trevor Morris to be their head coach.

Last year, Coach Morris helped coach Nampa to a 4A consolation trophy where they took down conference 4A rival Bishop Kelly 53-48.

The Bulldogs are coming off a year where they had a 15-1 record in the 4A SI conference, and finished the year 22-5. Returning from last year’s team are first team all-conference (4A SIC), second team all-state 4A team senior guard JD Schutt, second team all-conference (4A SIC), senior guard, Blaine Roberts, honorable mention (4A SIC), junior guard, Kooper Wilcox, junior forward Rob Davenport, and junior forward Johnny Siguenza.

Schutt led the Bulldogs in scoring and had a fantastic showing during the state tournament last season, and carries with him the ability to make any shot on the floor. Roberts has two years of varsity experience under his collar, and along with Schutt looks to be the leaders for the Bulldogs this season.

“JD and Blaine’s ability to create for themselves and others will be a huge advantage for us as we make the jump to 5A this year. One of our biggest strengths is our willingness to work together as a team and our willingness to pass up a good shot for a great shot,” said Coach Morris about his team.

The new-dogs for Nampa come in the way of two junior guards in Riley Brown and Taylor Becker. They will help replace the losses of two graduates In Tyler Hamlin and Jonathon Koenig, and bring length and quickness to a team that will need both this season.

Nampa only lost five games last season, but one thing that was consistent in those losses was that the Bulldogs were out-rebounded in all of those games.

When I asked Coach Morris about the changes he would like to make this season he had this to say, “We need to improve on limiting our opponents to one shot. Our seniors last season brought great leadership and size, and those are a couple areas we will need to replace this season. Our quickness and our toughness are things that we will lean on this year, and rebounding will be a big emphasis for us as we are jumping up in competition.”

Heading into a new year it looks like Nampa has all the pieces to be competitive in the 5A Southern Idaho Conference.

The Bulldogs will be part of a tough Pod A, as they are thrown into the tougher side of the conference that has four teams ranked in the preseason top 10 (according to idahosports.com).

Nampa has some great talent on their team, but the question for these Bulldogs this season is: Will they be able to adjust to a new coach and conference and come together as a team to have another successful year?
SHOCKER: Nampa is my surprise team for the 5A SIC in the 2014-15 season.

GAMES TO WATCH: Nampa opens up with Skyview at home on the 2nd of December. This game, like every year is a big game because they are cross-town rivals.
