Basketball in Dietrich is as much of a family activity as anywhere in Idaho, with boys basketball coach Wayne Dill having son Trey on his team and girls basketball coach Acey Shaw’s daughter Jacey on his unit.

Both have experienced great success patrolling the sidelines for the Blue Devils over the years.

While the Dietrich boys have performed admirably during regular season action for the last six years, the goal in the new campaign will be to finally get over the hump and find success come state tournament play.

During the course of regular season action, Dietrich did not have a loss against a 1A school on its way to a 21-5 mark and an undefeated 13-0 tally in North Side Conference play.

While the results of last year might lead many to pick the Blue Devils as the favorites in conference again in 2014-2015, the losses of some pivotal pieces to that success will make things a little more difficult this time around.

Solid two-way players Vance Perron and Jacob Dalton are the major losses for the team, with younger talent being asked to step in and fill the basket on the offensive end, while also shutting down opposing playmakers on the defensive side of the equation. Dalton was a Second Team All-State player his senior year.

Watching Shaw and his Lady Devils take four 1AD2 state championships in a row has given the boys team a taste of what they could experience, now they hope it’s their turn to hoist the trophy.

The efforts will be led by Trey Dill, something that can help the Dietrich coaching staff sleep easier at night given the talents of the explosive wing player. He averaged 16 points per game and 8.2 rebounds per game last season.

Thanks to a seemingly effortless shot, Dill is able to put points on the board in a hurry, something that had the Blue Devils seconds away from a state semifinal appearance last year before upstart Ambrose was able to pull off the upset.

Being the son of the coach, it is expected to have a good basketball IQ, something the younger Dill has plenty of, getting his teammates involved when he has to.

Offensively, Dietrich should again be outstanding this season. Last year the Blue Devils made it difficult for scoreboard operators all across the state, putting up over 66 points per contest, far and away the highest total of teams to make the state tournament in Caldwell.

Newcomers Jake Smith and Garrett Astle will be asked to step in and make big contributions in their first full seasons at the varsity level.

It will again be expected for the Blue Devils to play stingy, aggressive defense after allowing just over 46 points per game last year. Forcing turnovers is the name of the game for Wayne Dill’s group, something that leads to easy baskets on breakaways the other way.

While it will be difficult to replace some of the talent that has been lost in Dietrich, expect the Dill’s to have a big say in how competitive they are in the North Side Conference, and eventually the state tournament.
