Lots of the offensive productivity has departed the hardwood due to graduation for the Shoshone Indians basketball team, although Head Coach Dr. Rob Waite is optimistic that he has the pieces in place to step in and produce.
After a 12-11 season last time around, a new task will face Shoshone with Valley and Oakley entering the 1AD1 Snake River Conference after competing in 2A last year.
Both the Vikings and Hornets are expected to be competitive and challenge for conference supremacy from the get-go.
For Shoshone, sophomores Jose Regalado and Devin Bollar are the only players returning who received much meaningful playing time last season. The pair are the only players back who averaged over three points per game.
“Jose Regalado and Devin Bollar will be in new roles, but certainly have the ability to lead the team,” said Waite.
“Our goal is to play a lot of basketball outside of the season. So, while we lost 80 percent of our scoring and 70 percent of our rebounding, I expect us to compete,” he added.
Regalado averaged 7.3 points and 5.6 rebounds per game last season, while Bollar tallied 3.8 points and 3.8 rebounds per game. Both players will be relied upon to produce even more now that some of the key players for the Indians have departed.
Sergio Regalado and Thayne Hagen were described by Waite as a couple more players who will be expected to increase their production as they step into larger roles this season.
Adam Butler, David Stull, John Mabbut, Juan Villagran, Tyler Simonson and Alan Ramos are the others who will be on the varsity squad, none of which have received heavy playing time at the varsity level in the past, but all of whom Waite has high expectations for.
The unit will run an offensive attack heavily based around perimeter play.
“Basketball should be fun and we try to keep that in mind,” said Waite. “We play an up-tempo, 3-point based game.”
That pace should help offset Shoshone not being one of the bigger teams in the league.
It will be critical for the Indians to find some scoring threats early in the season to make up for the mass exodus of scoring that occurred after last year. If Waite can find some scorers early on in the season Shoshone could be a sleeper in the conference.
