After a long, successful run as a boys basketball coach at Lewiston High, Dave Cornelia is back as a head coach with the Bengals.

Only this time, it's as the Lewiston girls basketball coach.
Cornelia coached boys basketball for 20 seasons at Lewiston, including the final eight as head coach. In his final season, 2008-09, Lewiston won the state boys title for the first time since 1948.

He then took a break from coaching, before returning this season as girls coach, where he succeeds Pat Teichmer, who had a nice run of his own coaching the Bengal girls. Under Teichmer, the Bengals became a force to be reckoned with in the ultra-competitive 5A Inland Empire League, which has produced the past eight state champions. Under Teichmer, Lewiston won two of those, in 2011 and '12, and was second at state in 2010.

Lewiston's girls went 22-3 last year and finished fifth at state, losing to Mountain View of Meridian in the third-place game.

The Bengals return seven varsity players, including Emilee Schlader, who's also a volleyball standout, and was a first-team all-Idaho selection last year; and Lynzee Wilson, a first-team all-5A IEL selection last year.

Among the other returnees are Halle White and Cali Moscrip. Cornelia is also looking forward to the addition of junior point guard Haylee Weeks.

Cornelia likes the depth and experience on this year's team, and is hoping that leads to a sound defensive team and "lots of kids that can score on a given night."

Cornelia, who would also like to see a shot clock added in Idaho, said a couple must-see games on Lewiston's schedule include the season opener vs. Centennial, and the home game with Lake City, which figures to be one of the top teams in the 5A IEL.
