After making the state tournament during the 2011-2012 season, the Malad Lady Dragons have struggled to replicate the same amount of success since.

Last year was the closest they have come to a return trip to the big dance since the aforementioned season, falling in the state play-in game 38-35 to Melba at Burley High School.

Following the loss of Brooke Sorensen, their best player last year and one of the most energetic players in east Idaho, Malad will be searching for a leader to take over.

The guard line looks to be the most promising area for Head Coach Bob Sorensen this season, with a couple of seniors leading the way.

Senior point guard Saige Smith returns to patrol things on both sides of the floor, while senior guard Paige Robbins will be counted on to provide some scoring punch for a team that will try to find an offensive identity early in the new campaign.

As the season goes on expect a youth movement to take full effect, with new players being relied on to bring Malad back to the Treasure Valley.

Sami Williams, Hannah Peterson and Emmah Petersen are expected to lead the group of newcomers.

Ball movement for the Dragons needs to be crisp, with a limited amount of turnovers along with that, for an offensive resurgence to take place. Malad requires fluid passing all over the floor in their offensive attack when it is clicking on all cylinders, so Smith will need to continue to lead the way for them.

Along with the efficiency in the half-court, Sorensen’s team will try to get out and run whenever they get the chance, pushing the tempo in an attempt to wear down other teams and get easy baskets themselves.

A point of emphasis early in the season will be trying to find a low post presence to create a more balanced team. This will be a spot where an unheralded player will step up if the Dragons are to challenge in the 2A ranks this year.

Residing in the 2A Southeast Idaho Conference, the same league which Soda Springs plays in, creates a challenging path to reach the state tournament each year. The Cardinals have made the state tournament for 12 consecutive seasons under head coach Wade Schvaneveldt, a historic run in itself.

With the new season the expectations will continue to be high for Soda Springs, with no other teams in the conference appearing to stand as major challengers between them and Malad for the regular season title.
