Team Preview:

Written By: Ryan Lee

The Mountain View Mavericks are coming off an 8-14 season, but will return a lot of key pieces from last year’s team. The Mavericks graduated seven seniors, but will add six juniors and a sophomore to their roster. Returning for Mountain View are two 5A SIC Honorable Mentions in senior guard, Damen Thacker and junior guard, Cam Howard. Thacker and Howard will be expected to lead the team and provide stability to an unproven roster.

The Mavericks will be coached again this season by 11th year Head Coach Jon Nettleton who is excited to get this year underway. We have a good mix with our team this season. We have a few returners mixed in with quite a few young talented players. We will have our struggles early, but should be fun to watch as the season progresses.

Offense: Over the past few seasons Mountain View has had a guard oriented roster. It looks to be the same again this season, which leads me to believe that the Mavericks will be one of the faster paced teams in the conference. Coach Nettleton wants his team to get up and down the floor in transition and push the ball on offense, but wants his team to stay under control. Mountain View struggled shooting the ball last season and often times took bad shots. Their returners will need to be good on floor leaders and when easy buckets aren’t available, reset, and get into their motion offense.

Defense: Being a team of guards Mountain View likes to put pressure on opposing back courts. The Mavericks will mainly play man to man, but want to play defense without fouling this season. They committed way too many fouls and gave their opponents easy points at the free throw line.

Wrap-Up: Mountain View will have more experience on their team this season, but if they want to be successful they will need to focus on playing hard, doing the little things, and being loyal to each other (Pillars of Mountain View Basketball). We will need to grow as a team and understand our roles early in the season. We want to be playing our best basketball by February and have a chance to make a run in our conference tournament. WE WANT TO BE PLAYING IN MARCH.– Coach Nettleton.

GAMES TO WATCH: The annual favorite Stinky Stinker game will be played on February 9th at Meridian High school. This is always a fun fundraiser for the team and their fans
