Team Preview:

Written by: Sven Alskog

One year after falling one win shy of the 1AD1 state championship game, the Oakley Hornets enter the new campaign with many of the same faces hungry for another opportunity.

This Hornets group will be well-rounded yet again, with plenty of depth, something that could help push them over the top. Second Team All-State guard Jordan Cranney will once again lead the charge, providing senior leadership for the team as well.

After having to sit out last season due to injury, fellow senior William Wybenga returns and will be expected to add to the depth on each end.

There are plenty of distributors who help spark solid ball movement for Oakley, with the next step being to convert on open shots more often.

“I would like to improve our team 3-point percentage and our team free throw percentage from last year,” said Head Coach Travis Noble.

The inside-out combo of Hewstyn Beck and Caleb Nyman will be instrumental in trying to make that happen, with Beck a key on the outside and Nyman on the interior.

A couple key players from last season exited due to graduation for the Hornets in Kwayd Wadsworth and Curtis Bedke.

“Kwayd did all the things that don’t show up in a stat sheet and Curtis provided some scoring in bursts,” said Noble.

With the group in place, Noble looks to see improvement in defensive rebounding as well. Overall however, the defense looks to be a strength for the Hornets.

“We will be a hard-nosed man-to-man defensive team,” added Noble. “Again very unselfish on the defensive end as well. We will play defense as a unit.”

After playing in and winning plenty of close games last season, Oakley hopes to take the next step and move towards a state championship game in the new campaign.
