Team Preview

The Nepzperce Indians enter the 2015-2016 season with high expectations. Going by the moto, “To give anything less than your best is to sacrifice the gift,” the upcoming season looks like it may be a gift for the Nepzperce Indians.

Now in his 6th season with the Indians, head coach Dave Snodgrass is returning two 2nd team All-League players in Tianna Leitch and Kourtne Carpenter and also has some good incoming talent in freshmen Hannah Stapleton and Sydney Boyer. “They are two freshmen but they can really play,” said Snodgrass. “They can both run and play the press.”

An up-tempo offense combined with defensive pressure is what Snodgrass preaches. The Indians will continue to be a force to be reckoned with in the 1A D2 classification under that philosophy.

“We have extraordinary depth at all positions which will allow us to rest our starters” Snodgrass said. “We will press and run, both out of zone and man defense.”

The Indians ended last season with a 15-8 record. Coach Snodgrass lost guard Arika Arnzen and post player Sydney Kuther to graduation, both of which averaged over 10 points per contest.

This year however, the Indians will not rebuild, they will reload. Guards Kourtne Carpenter, Tianna Leitch Parker Boyer and Janelle Nelson are all more than capable of filling the shoes of the lost seniors.
“We hope to be able to run the floor this year,” coach Snodgrass said. “Our guards are really quick and they can shoot.”

In addition, Maddie Stapleton and Maria Mosman are solid inside players and will only give the Indians more flexibility as the season moves forward.

With Carpenter running the show at point guard, the Indians will be a better shooting team. “Kourtne may be the best point guard in the league,” Snodgrass said.

Despite the hype, there is still room for improvement. “We need to improve on rebounding so we can run and don’t give up 2nd shots,” said Snodgrass.

The Indians are already off to a great start and the season hasn’t even begun yet. Tianna Leitch was the recipient of United Dairymen of Idaho’s Interscholastic Star Award.

“This is a great and deserving honor for her and Nezperce. She’s smart and works hard every single day,” Snodgrass said.

The expectations are high for the Indians, but there is a reason for those high expectations. They are good.
