Team Preview

Written by: David Bashore

The Spartans went 16-9 a season ago, and while they lost their top two scorers, they have depth and experience returning to mount another successful campaign.

Priest River returns five players with varsity experience: guards Rachel Akre, Melissa Krampert and Tabitha Wilson, and guard-forward combo players Avery Summers and Alyssa Carey. Four more juniors come up to the varsity squad to give depth, especially with a heavy junior class.

The Spartans have good fundamental offense and quickness and will be able to run the floor regularly, but down their top two scorers from last season they are in need of someone (or someones) to step up and take on the role of go-to scorer in the offense.

That speed and quickness should translate well on the defensive end of the floor as well, with Priest River being able to harass and hassle offenses and force turnovers. That’ll need to be an emphasis, as the team lacks height and may struggle to rebound consistently.

Timberlake is the clear favorite in the Intermountain League, but the rest of the group is fighting for a second berth to the state tournament. If Priest River can attack this season with the same vigor it has in recent seasons, the Spartans should be there or thereabouts in the end.
