Team Preview

Written by: Will Hoenike

FOLO – first on, last off. FOLO Me.

Those are words that the 2015-16 Shelley Russets girls basketball team is living by. And it excites second—year head coach Trevor Elordi.

“Our team chemistry,” Elordi noted. “Everyone is willing to work together.”

The Russets have a strong core of players back from last season’s team, a team that won 17 games and finished third at the Idaho 3A state basketball tournament. Leading the way is first-team All-Conference forward Kira Marlow. The 5-foot-10 senior averaged over ten points per game as a junior and saved one of her best performances for last, notching 14 points and 15 rebounds in Shelley’s third-place victory over Filer.

The team also returns second-team All-Conference guard Hannah Hanson along with senior point guard Kenzie Call and senior post player Jacky Wilson. Throw in 6-foot-4 junior post Bailey Stoddard and it’s easy to see why Elordi would be optimistic about the season.

“We are very athletic across the board and have good size inside,” Elordi said. “We try to focus on good execution.”

At the time this preview was written, the Russets had started with a 3-3 record. Two of the losses for the 3A school came against 5A Idaho Falls and 5A Hillcrest.

One of Shelley’s toughest opponents figures to be Sugar-Salem. The Diggers are off to a 6-0 start (as of 12/3) and have only had one game decided by less than 16 points. The two rivals are quite familiar with one another – they met five times last season, including the 3A state semifinals. Sugar-Salem won in tight, hard-fought contest, 49-45, in overtime before knocking off Timberlake for the 3A state championship.

The two teams will meet this season in Sugar City on January 13 and then in Shelley on January 23. Is anyone going to rule out a third, or even fourth, meeting in the district tournament or at the state tournament?

We’re not. The Russets have some good pieces and should be a force to be reckoned with before the curtain draws on the season in February.
