Team Preview

Written by: Will Hoenike

Second-year head coach Jordan Tucker likes his team. Enough so to think the Archers could step out of the shadows of the school’s boys program, which won the 1A Division 1 state title last March.

“We have a shot to qualify for state,” Tucker told the Preview. “We are a well-balanced offense. Teams will not be able to beat us by stopping one player.”

The Archers do have to replace honorable-mention All-Conference forward Ellie Watts, but the team returns five seniors, giving it good experience and good balance. Leading the charge in the backcourt are seniors Annie West, Lauren Caven and Caitlyn Cicero. The team also returns a pair of senior post players in Elissa Skinner and Emily Roehling.

Junior guard Kate Roberts and sophomore post Maddi Mathis also return.

“I expect Kate Roberts to have a breakout year,” Tucker noted. “Along with Emily Roehling and Lauren Caven.”

Such breakthroughs would mean good things for the Archers, who scored 45 points or more just four times last season. The team was held to 30 or fewer seven times.

The good news for Archer fans is that four of the seven came in the first month of the season. The team executed its offense better down the stretch, topping 40 points in three of its final four games, including each of its two district tournament games.

Notus and Liberty Charter represented District III at the 1A Division 1 state basketball tournament last spring. One big key for Ambrose to take one of those spots is to take care of the basketball – the team averaged more than 15 turnovers per game last season. Cutting down that number is important.

The Archers have a home-and-home series with 2A Nampa Christian and is also scheduled to participate in the North Star tournament over the holiday break in late December. The squad will play four of its final six regular-season games at home to prepare for the district tournament. If Tucker’s pre-season optimism proves prophetic, the Archers should be in contention when that district tournament rolls around in February.
