Coach Patrick Goff’s Horseshoe Bend Mustangs were one win away from last season’s 1A Division I Girls State Basketball tournament, but were edged out in the state play-in game by Genesee. Don’t be surprised if it doesn’t come down to a one-game play-in for the Mustangs this season.

The team is led by one of the top returners in all of 1A basketball in senior guard Kate Renfro. She was selected 1st Team All-Western Idaho Conference as a junior and started her senior season with a bang. In the team’s season-opening game at Garden Valley, she posted 34 points, 14 rebounds and seven steals. Then, a week later against a solid Idaho City team, Renfro tossed in 16 points, ten rebounds and seven more steals.

She’s just one piece of a talented backcourt at Horseshoe Bend. She’s joined in the backcourt by senior Riley Renfro and junior Syringa Riley. The three combine to present problems to opposing backcourts both on offense with their dribble penetration and on defense with their ball pressure. That should lead to good things for the Mustangs this season.

Goff’s team is adjusting to life without post player Jade Warren and guard Lexi Quijas, who were seniors on last season’s 17-win season. That leads to more opportunity for players like senior Aspin Quijas, junior Billie Atkinson and sophomore Sage Huston. Each of those players were varsity contributors last season. Junior guard Ciara Drake and freshman forward Brook Lane will be fighting for minutes as well on what has the looks of a very solid roster.

One area the Mustang coaching staff is hoping to strengthen is three-point shooting. Having someone (or multiple someones) who can knock down open shots from the perimeter will only make the Renfros and Riley more effective off the dribble on offense.

Defensively, the Mustangs held seven opponents to 20 points or less last season. Idaho City – a good team – only mustered 29 before Thanksgiving this season. It appears that stopping the ball and creating turnovers will be a strength for Horseshoe Bend again this season.

It’s a daunting non-conference schedule for Horseshoe Bend this season, featuring a home-and-home schedule with 2A McCall-Donnelly and also a home boys/girls doubleheader against Salmon River. The Savages figure to be one of the top 1A Division II girls teams in the state. In WIC play, it looks like a tussle for the top spot between Horseshoe Bend, Liberty Charter and Idaho City, with the Wildcats coming to Horseshoe Bend on December 12. Liberty Charter doesn’t play at Horseshoe Bend this season, the Mustangs play there on December 15.
