For the last two years, Boise has been in Idaho’s final four as the Braves lost in the state championship game to Mountain View in 2014 and fell short of a state title run again last season – this time in the semifinals to Centennial.

Although the Braves have not won a state title in over a decade, Boise has been in the top three the last two seasons and with the return of First Team All-State and Oklahoma commit Mandy Simpson, Boise looks to be right in the conversation once again for 2016.
To get back to the state tournament, the Braves will have to win ball games without two key pieces from last season.

Head coach Kim Brydges lost Hana Orton and Isabelle Hadden, who is currently on scholarship at the University of Idaho, to graduation last season.

But new impact players such as freshmen, Peyton McFarland, sophomore forward, Reagan Hall and sophomore guard Syd Davis, will give Boise more depth than they have had in previous seasons, prompting Brydges to try some newer defensive tactics.

“We hope to press more and mix up defenses more often than in years past,” Brydges said. “We play a lot of man, but when we do add in zone defenses, we like to continue our man to man concepts.”

The defense surrendered an average of 44.5 points per contest last season with the offense averaged just over 57 points per game.

“Offensively, we have a really smart team who is also very unselfish,” Brydges said. “This year, I anticipate that we can be successful both in our main offense as well as through many quick-hitters.”

Running that offense will be senior point guard Audrey Dingel, although the offense will mostly go through Simpson, who committed to Oklahoma last September.

“Mandy signing with Oklahoma is a pretty big deal,” Brydges said. “She comes from a big basketball family.”

Simpson’s older brother, Sam Simpson is in his junior season at Seattle Pacific University.

Mandy Simpson averaged a double-double last season, scoring 17 per-contest while hauling in 11.4 rebounds. Simpson will be the senior leader on a team that has found itself with an increasing amount of deep youth.

With two sophomores and one freshmen expected to see a significant amount of playing time, the Braves will have to mature and do so quickly.

“I’m very interested to see how far we can grow and improve our younger players by the season’s end,” Brydges said.
