Team Preview

For the last couple of seasons Meghan Hughes has been the do-everything option for the Filer Wildcats. This time around, things will look much different, with the all-around star taking her talents to the hardwood at the College of Southern Idaho this winter.

Just a couple years ago Filer was the class of the 3A classification in Idaho, taking home the state title in 2014 and utilizing an outstanding core group to put the program led by Head Coach Kody Ketterling on the map.

Many of the faces who will be relied upon to provide big impacts this season were freshman during that run, meaning they had the opportunity to see the success and the hard work that went into making it happen.

The new group is one that will look to push the tempo on both ends.

"We as a team will be an aggressive, faster team this year. We need to produce turnovers and pressure teams into making mistakes on the court," said Ketterling.

The backcourt that will place pressure on the ball defensively is led by the senior tandem of Brooke Mason and Myklaine Ketterling.

From the point guard position junior Jailyn Gartner and newcomer Colbie Kliegl are going to see plenty of time.

"Our offensive strengths will be more of a team distribution," said Ketterling. "Jailyin Gartner will give us a spark out front. We will be looking to spread the ball and get lots of players involved in the offensive side of the ball this year."

Plenty of areas are being focused on by the coaching staff though for improvement.

"We have to become a better scoring team, reduce the amount of turnovers and make the close and easy shots. We need to average 50-60 shots per game to produce opportunities for us to score."

All of the emphasis on speeding things up through pressure defense should help to make that a feasibility.

While the guards are expected to be the strength of the group, sophomore newcomer Jaylee Bingham provides some size to help on the interior.

After falling in the state play-in game last year, Ketterling hopes to get back to the tournament this time around.

"I think that we will stay more focused as a team. We will be faster as a team this year which will help us on all sides of the court. These kids have all played together so I hope they can stay focused on each other and the team focus of being as one, staying forever strong through the whole season."

Defending conference champion Kimberly lost plenty of talent, potentially opening up the door for the Wildcats this season in league play.
