Team Preview

After falling short of the goal of qualifying for the State tournament a year ago, Coach Dave Cornelia is extremely eager to lace them up and get back on the court. The Bengals are looking to bounce back from a third-place finish in the always competitive 5A Inland Empire League.

One can use the excuse of being too young a year ago, but Cornelia looks at it a bit differently. Last year shaped them for this year. This year, they are a year older, more experienced, and extremely close with some of the best chemistry around. Returning six players, the squad has only two seniors -wings Abbey Roy and Brella Santana- who will be looking to do everything they can to get the Bengals back to where they feel they belong.

The chemistry, as previously mentioned, is the IT factor that will see the Bengals working the together down the long road to the State tournament in Boise. This is something that a coach can’t teach. The credit goals to the players. They are returning six very athletic players who play and feed well off one another. Along with the chemistry, the Bengals will be blessed with speed the type of speed all coaches wish they had.

To go along with the speed is another thing all coaches wish for, depth. Fans can expect this team to get up and down both offensively and defensively working to wear down the opposition.

With speed and depth atop the coaching list, improving the team shooting percentage will be just as important. Improving in this area could assist this high energy, pressure team get over that hump and get back to where fans have been used to seeing them for many years.

Junior point guard Demi Randal will be doing everything she can to make this happen. A year more experienced, Randal will be well versed in creating opportunities and spreading the wealth for herself and teammates. Along with Roy and Santana, junior wing Bryn Cornelia, daughter of the coach, will seize all the opportunities presented. At this point, there has mention of only perimeter players. Most basketball fans hear speed and athleticism and think only the perimeter positions.

This team would not be complete without the mention of posts Cameron Cady (junior) and a player that you will want to remember moving forward in Kendyll Kinzer. Both Cady and Kinzer will be determined to improve the overall team rebounding on both ends of the floor, creating as many opportunities as possible for this fast-paced team.

The 5A Inland Empire League schedule is always tough with the likes of Lake City, Post Falls, and Coeur d’Alene. Look for Lewiston to bounce back and improve from the third-place league finish. The thought of the word bouncing back sounds a bit off to Bengal fans. Expect Coach Cornelia and is speed, athletic, and chemistry filled squad to improve on their 17 victories from a season ago.
