The last two seasons, losing became a way of life in Mountain Home.

Blow outs were routine and hopes of a state tournament appearance were nonexistent.

The offense averaged 35 points-per game last season while the defense surrendered over 57 points-per night, the most coming on Jan. 26 road trip to Bishop Kelley where the Tigers fell 72-24.

The Tigers have won two games in the last two seasons, including a 2014-15 season where Mountain Home went winless, a losing streak that started halfway through the 2013-14 season. The Tigers lost 33 straight ball games over a three-year span and have won four of their last 50, two of which were to begin the 2016-17 season.

The Tigers return five players from last year’s squad and looked primed be competitive this season as they started the year 2-0 with wins over Columbia and Kimberly.

Sophia Harris is lost to graduation, but Kylie Meadow Sable Lohmeier’s addition to the low post with Jordan Funk running things up top has Mountain Home primed for a comeback season.

This has given head coach Brent Keener a lineup he says he can win with.

“We need some breaks and things to go our way but we should be much more competitive,” Keener said. “Our girls need to believe that we can compete and play with the better teams in our conference.”

The group is young, but experienced.

The Tigers return two sophomores with playing experience in Jazzi Cristobal and Emilee Pippin while seniors Liz Ryan, Jacey Carr Anna Pedroza return for a final chance to put together a winning season.

While the team struggles to run a half-court offense and three pointers being adventurous, Keener will play a fast up-tempo style to counter the team’s weakness.

Depth and experience has improved across the board, allowing Keener to feel more conferrable with his up-tempo style.

If the Tigers can play their up-tempo style they will be tough to beat. But in order to play that style they will have to play sound, fundamental defense, forcing missed shots so they can get out and run.

The more defensive break downs they are, the more baskets they will give up, which means less fast breaks, which means less point on the board.

To avoid these defensive break downs, the Tigers have to communicate, force the missed shot and rebound the ball.
