Three years in a row, three trips to the 1A D1 State Championship falling short each time, but inching closer and closer to adding to the school’s state leading nine championships. Coach Lori Mader would love to add a tenth to the trophy case. Standing in her way is conference rival Lapwai.

Season after season, the seventh-year coach finds ways to reload her squad and get them closer to that title. This year will be no different than the previous years.

Coach Mader is faced with replacing a solid, all-around athlete in Haley Danly, who was tough, disciplined, and the leader on the court.

“Haley was our leading scorer and had fast, strong hands,” comments Coach Mader.

With the departure of Danly and other seniors, Mader will be calling upon the battle tested post in Shaye Uptmor and a guard in Kylie Tidwell who had a break out season. But, the player closest to replacing the leadership role vacated by Danly will be that of junior point guard Angela Wemhoff, a 2nd Team All-Stater. Wemhoff has shown poise and control while guiding teammates on the offensive end. There isn’t much that rattles this experienced point guard. She understands her role in the offense and the team.

Coach Mader may need to replace a few players, but in the Pirate system, everyone has a role and everyone excepts the role. Being very disciplined in her approach, the team follows step for step with her. Mader finds a way to replace talented players year after year. She seems to be able to plug and play different players with no hesitation. She credits the players for her success because she has the “ability to coach great kids with great attitude.”

This season will not be much different than the previous years. The Pirates are quick and fast up and down the lineup. They must replace their leading scorer and find a go to player down the stretch. Defensively, they are fast, but Mader wants them quicker and to get more in tuned with each other’s movements. How does she plan to do that? Simple. Do the little things right.

With Lapwai looming on the schedule in a strong Whitepine that saw their conference finish 1, 2, 3 last season, Coach Mader is working to get her players to step up and recognize their rolls. Lapwai has 3-peated, but Prairie is hungry to ass their school’s tenth and end the Wildcat streak.
