Team Preview

Seven seniors return working to prepare for their final season for Coach Jesse Daniels (4th season). Within that group is the leading scorer Mayra Rodriguez (First Team All-North Idaho League) who is as strong and athletic as the come and a solid two-way player in Lexi Schwartz (Second Team All-North Idaho League). Add to the mix another strong defender in junior Kenzie Anderson and newcomer sophomore Hayley Bretz. The equals a pretty good looking roster for Coach Daniels.

The only major concern for the Maniacs is the lack of size. But, to make up for the size factor, there is a thing called speed. The Maniacs possess plenty of speed up and down the roster. The loss of post Cassidy West has left a void inside, but Coach Daniels isn’t concerned because of the abilities of every player coming back this season.

The team will be led by Rodriguez who is coming off a 15 point per game average last season. This senior can take over games with her decision making, ball handling, and much improved outside shooting. Joining the offensive push and being asked to increase her output is Schwartz, who, per her coach, “has the ability to average over 10 points per game” with the emphasis on over. The offense is made up of much improved shooters that must take more shots this season.

On the other side, Coach Daniel has pesky players in Schwartz and Anderson, who will be called upon to defend the top players on opposing teams. The Maniacs have the individuals to play good defense but they will need the team to play much better and faster together, as well as becoming better communicators.

Being very senior heavy, Coach Daniels believes this team has what it takes to battle through the 2A North Idaho League and give themselves the opportunity to qualify for State. Standing in their way will be Grangeville, who has been the team representing the league at State, but has seen a change in leadership this season, and an athletic St. Maries squad. The league is small so every game will count. Count on being there with the Maniacs as the battle through the North Idaho Conference. Count on being there for the rivalry games against Grangeville, especially the final game of the year, which could be for the top spot.
