Parma is inching closer to getting back to the standard set in 2008 and 2009 when the Panthers won back-to-back state titles.
While the assembled squad for this season is not expected to leapfrog that far ahead in the progression right away, there is optimism that the unit can surprise some people this time around.
That leads right into the motto for this season, which is pretty simple and self-explanatory.
"Win the games you are not supposed to," said Head Coach Jake Walgamott.
Last year Parma knocked off Timberlake on the road in a state play-in game, prior to hanging tough with Homedale in a 28-0 loss to end the season. What should be noted is the progression from earlier in the year, when the Trojans had defeated the Panthers 55-0.
The Panthers need to further establish the passing attack to compliment the ground game, which will make the zone read much more effective.
While skill position players such as quarterback Payton Pinz, running back Jesse Camacho and receivers Briton Parker, Wyatt Neal and Braydon Jensen are back, each member of the offensive line has departed, creating a huge hole, literally, up front.
Running back Jimmy Dawson has also graduated, the unquestioned team leader on both sides of the ball.
Defensively Parma should have a chance to be strong against the pass with all defensive backs returning including Parker, Pinz, Neal, Jensen and Camacho. That group is going to be heavily tasked on each side of the ball, with the Panthers not possessing a surplus of depth.
Walgamott is most excited about seeing the improvement from the offensive side of the ball through the air.
"I'm most excited to see us throw the ball with some success," he said. "We have a good receiving core and I am really looking forward to seeing them in action."
The first opportunity for the head coach to see how that passing game will develop will be on August 26 when Parma hosts Marsing in a non-conference tilt.
