Since the days of Cody Pickett at quarterback in the late 90's, finding success on the football field for the Caldwell Cougars has proven difficult.

Numerous coaches have tried to right the ship, hundreds of players have circled through the program and blood, sweat and tears have been shed trying to get it right for the program.

The task now falls to new Head Coach Zac Farnam, previously the head man at Newport High School in Washington state.

Farnam will bring an exciting offensive style to Canyon County, as the Cougars hope to add a couple more wins to the 2-7 total from a year ago.

A pistol offense should add a nice wrinkle to things, with the overall goal to have less turnovers and to see quantifiable improvement in the passing game.

Junior Chase Berfeind will most likely get the chance to run things from the quarterback position, with a potentially good offensive line and backfield surrounding him.

That offensive front is led by returners Zack Ramos, Travis Mitchell and Simon Palominos. The trio look to open holes for running backs Noah Jaekels and Tevin Sio.

On the other side of the football the Cougars are going to go with a 4-2 look. Farnam listed three key areas on defense that Caldwell hopes to improve in the new year.

"Creating more turnovers, tackling and pursuit."

To become more competitive in the 4A SIC, getting those turnovers is one of the best ways to potentially pull off some surprises.

"Avoid the injury bug, win the turnover battle and pick a few good teams off early," said Farnam.

For a team hoping to turn it around under a first year head coach, the motto is simple.

"Win ugly."

With a rivalry game against Nampa scheduled out of the chutes, Caldwell will have an opportunity to get things started on the right foot under the new sideline leader.

He's eager to get things going on the season.

"My first season," said Farnam. "[I'm] excited to get to know these guys and get working."
