There’s a new boss in town along the Snake River and Kenny Mace is excited to be the new head coach at Marsing High School. His reason? The players he’ll be working with every day.

“The kids,” Mace told “They seem to be very excited about the changes and our coaching staff. I can’t wait to watch these guys compete and grow every day.”

The Huskies have struggled in the win/loss column in the past few years, something that the new head coach won’t focus on.

“We need to not focus on the destination,” he said. “We all have long-term goals. I think we need to focus on competing as hard as we can on this rep and then improving so that we can compete harder on the next rep.”

Mace inherited one of the top returning players in the Western Idaho Conference in OL/DL/RB – yes, offensive line, defensive line and running back – Mason Hall. The 6-foot-3, 230 pounder has been a fixture on the football field for the Huskies for the past couple of seasons, earning Honorable Mention All-WIC as a defensive lineman as a sophomore, second-team All-WIC as a defensive lineman as a junior and honorable mention All-WIC running back as a junior as well. He has also spent time at tackle during his Marsing career. Wherever he lines up on the field for Coach Mace and his staff, he figures to be one of the top players on the field.

He also inherited versatile RB/LB Dawson Walker, who returns for his senior season as well. Along with being a solid football player, Walker is an accomplished wrestler, having qualified for the state wrestling tournament as a junior at 160 pounds.

Beyond that, Mace will look to a lot of younger players to step into prominent roles this fall for the Huskies. Junior Enrique Quebrado will battle for playing time at running back along with sophomores Clancy King and Adonis Stelzried. Hopes are high that the group, collectively, can grow as the team looks to stay out of long-yardage situations.

“It will take some time to develop the talent there in the system we are running,” Mace pointed out. “We are focused on execution and understanding the ‘why’ to the offense.”

Defensively, Mace and his staff are excited about the depth in the secondary, led by Quebrado and King. So excited, in fact, that they expect some players to transition to linebacker with Walker and Stelzried to give Marsing a little more depth at that position. Hall will anchor the team’s defensive line.

“We need to pursue relentlessly to the football at all times and be the best tacklers when we get there,” Mace said of his defense. “We need to create more opportunities for our offense by getting turnovers and scoring on some of those turnovers.”

The Huskies have a prime opportunity in week one, when they host the Wendell Trojans. Both teams are young, led by first-year head coaches (Wendell is coached by former Trojan standout Cody Howerton) and hungry for success on the field. Mace and his staff are focused on that first game on August 25 but also anxious to see the team grow from game to game.

“We are going to compete to be better than we were the week before,” he continued. “Fans will get to see the gains our team makes weekly and that should be great to watch.”

Mace is preaching the process and preaching for the team to compete every down, every play. It will be important for the Huskies in the deep and talented Western Idaho Conference where there are plenty of teams that will be challenging for a spot in the 2A state playoffs.
