It’s been a rough few seasons if you’re a fan of the Salmon Savages.

The orange-and-black squad hasn’t had a winning season since 2012, which happened to be their first year at the 2A classification. Last season, Salmon hit rock bottom with a winless season. For them, the only way to go is up.

And they have a new man who’s willing to lead the charge.

New head coach Jason Linger takes over the Salmon program and hopes to revitalize a once-proud football tradition. He’ll have a few pieces to work with in this rebuilding project.

The team returns do-it-all senior Robel Clifton, who earned All-Conference honors in 2016 at wide receiver, defensive back, and as a punt and kick returner. Clifton will be joined on offense by senior running back Hunter Tarkalson and senior wide receivers Ethan Aldous and Ethan Jones. Senior Garrett Jones will anchor the line.

Defensively, Clifton will help lock down the secondary along with Aldous, while Ethan and Garrett Jones both lead the way at linebacker. Tarkalson will be the lead man on the defensive line.

“Our kids are excited to play,” said Linger. “We are excited about the seniors we have coming back, they are a strong group.”

The Savages begin their regular season slate of eight-games on Aug. 25 when they travel northward to Montana to take on Anaconda. Week two of the season brings another Montana matchup, this time with Florence-Carlton on Sept. 1. Salmon then travels westward to the Treasure Valley to face the Cole Valley Christian Chargers of Meridian on Sept. 9. The team then finishes their non-conference schedule at home against Teton on Sept. 15.

League play in the Nuclear Conference begins for Salmon with two consecutive home games, including Sept. 22 against Firth and Sept. 29 versus Ririe, a game that Linger said would be one to watch out for. The conference schedule concludes on the road with games on Oct. 6 at North Fremont and Oct. 20 at West Jefferson.

With only three spots available to the district for the state play-in round, Salmon will have to upset some teams ahead of them to find themselves in the playoffs. If their seniors can lead and guide the younger group to success, don’t be surprised to see Salmon in the playoffs again – soon.
