There were two constants in each of the victories in 2016 for the Cascade Ramblers. It started with defense, allowing 20 points or less in each win. The success carried over on offense as well with 26 and 40 point productions.

Aside from those two contests, Cascade allowed 46 or more on defense each week out. The Ramblers failed to put up more than 20 on any given week on the offensive end.

After that 2-6 mark fourth year Head Coach Adam Mapp hopes to see improvement on each side of the ball to get Cascade back in the discussion in the Long Pin Conference.

On the offensive side of things a young running back will be asked to lead the charge.

"[Good] quickness at running back from Ryan Littlejohn," said Mapp. "He has good quickness up front that will try to create holes in the power I."

The front has to see improvement though to maximize the talents of Littlejohn, just a freshman in his own right.

"Blocking was a major issue last year. Also negative plays either from penalties or loss of yards," added Mapp.

Replacing leading rusher and tackler Chris Giacomazzi will be a difficult task, with Littlejohn and Josh Higgins figuring to step into the large shoes at the linebacker position.

Mapp has a group of high energy guys on the defensive side of the ball to try to spark improvement.

"Most of the players have great motors. We hope to swarm the ball carrier with multiple defenders. Michael Onaindia [LB] and Finn Frederickson [LB] will lead the defensive unit."

With the struggles of a year ago in the rearview mirror for the group of defenders, a fresh start should help to get things headed back in the right direction.

Avoiding negative plays is a priority for this season.

"Not giving up big plays," said Mapp. "We had multiple games where we gave up 750 yards or more. Most of those yards were on big plays, mainly on third or fourth and long."

A good group is in place of character guys who are willing to work hard to get Cascade football back on the map. It has the head coach talking about it as the thing he is most looking forward to in the new season.

"How hard the kids work and the attitude they bring to the field."

The first opportunity to see that hard work pay off for the Ramblers will come on August 25 at Wilder.
