With perennial powerhouses like Fruitland, Homedale and Sugar-Salem, it’s hard to argue against 3A Idaho football being one of the more competitive classifications in the state.

Which makes Cameron Andersen’s 11-year stint at the helm of the Senators all the more impressive.

Hot off an 8-2 2019 campaign and a near state championship appearance, Andersen’s Senators look primed to make yet another run at the state title, returning seven players with postseason honors from a year ago. Had it not been for an early season 45-42 barnburner loss against Weiser, the Senators would have finished the regular season with a perfect record.

But a wealth of returning talent can’t mask the obvious hole left by quarterback Shane Jennings, now an Eastern Washington University Eagle. Jennings finished the season with 2,588 passing yards, 30 touchdowns and just five interceptions, helping the Gooding offense average 40 points per game and outsourcing opponents almost 25 points a week.

In his place, Andersen will call upon Kurtis Adkinson to serve as his offensive general. Andersen said he expects opposing defenses to try and bottle up his man of a QB, who stands at 6-foot-2, 250-pounds. A real downhill runner, Adkinson can show flashes of Pittsburgh’s Big Ben when put under pressure.

To help fill out his skill positions, Andersen said Colston Loveland will make the transition from wide receiver to tight end, taking full advantage of his 6-foot-4, 210-pound frame.

On defense, graduated Jared Conrad leaves a massive leadership role yet to be filled. Andersen Conrad was to the Senator defense what Jennings was to the offense.

In the box, the Senators can rely on Tayte Gillette and Sam Demale, a pair of linebackers Andersen have phenomenally developed over the offseason. Logan Anderson, meanwhile, will lock up the back end, assisted by Tyler Metcalf and Jase Faulkner.

The Senators, on the hunt for their first state title in 35 years, are scheduled to open the season at Jerome Aug. 28.
