Sugar-Salem over Filer 60-55
Ya, I know. The two best 3A teams in the state playing in the first game of the tournament. Filer, led by senior G/F Katie Hughes (committed to play VB for University of Idaho), is on a
15-game win streak, the longest under head coach Kody
Ketterling. Sugar-Salem returns to state
for the seventh time in the last eight seasons. At 22-1 the Diggers are definitely the team to beat in 3A. However, if anyone is going to do it, it's Filer, and it will come in the first game of the tournament Thursday afternoon.
Priest River over Fruitland 31-26
The Spartans are 15-7 and the Grizzlies are 13-9. Priest River is hoping to do better than their two-and-out performance last year and Fruitland is glad to be back after missing the big dance completely last year. The Grizzlies seem to be peaking at the right time, but the Spartans are the district champs for a reason.
Snake River over Timberlake 47-42
While it's true that Snake River comes in to the tournament as the #1 seed out of district 5,
this year they went 7-1 against district
competition and 6-8 against all other teams. The White Tigers are coming off of a 26 point blowout of Kimberly in the play-in game to advance to state. Timberlake has some youth, but they are good.
Homedale over Teton 48-37
The Lady Trojans bring back all five starters from last year's state tournament team and won their first district title since before some of the players on the team were even born, 1998-99. Teton is only team at state this year with a losing record, 11-12. Of those 11, however, Teton beat defending 3A state champion Snake River twice and had wins over 2A powers Firth, West Jefferson and North
Fremont during the regular season.
