Region Teams Sweep Statewide All-Star Games

The 18th annual Idaho Statewide All-Star Basketball Event featured deft passing, superb ball-handling, outstanding shooting, and a one-handed slam dunk that fans won't soon forget.

After the Region All-Stars defeated the Metro All-Stars in the girls' contest 76-58, the Region Boys did the same, earning a 109-108 victory thanks to a game-winning dunk from Lakeland's Noah Haaland as time expired.


In between the All-Star games, Fruitland's Hyrum Lindsey defeated Haaland in the Slam Dunk Contest, and Madison's Taden King outlasted Snake River's Josee Steadman in the co-ed Three Point Shootout.  Lindsey earned a perfect score of 30, earning 10s from all three judges to win the dunk title.  He leaped over three players stacked in a straight line to grab the win.  After hitting 17 three-point shots in each of the first two rounds of the Shootout, King made 19 to defeat Steadman in the finals.

The Region Girls jumped out to a 43-31 halftime lead, and were never seriously threatened after that.  Carey High's Kylie Wood was named MVP after finishing with 18 points.

The Boys All-Star game was more dramatic.  A back-and-forth affair seemed to belong to the Metro All-Stars, after Garden Valley's Covy Kelly nailed a three from the left wing with 15 seconds to play, giving Metro a 108-107 lead.  But with 3.7 seconds to play, Region coach Mike McLean of Post Falls drew up the game-winning play.  Haaland got the inbounds pass at the top of the key, drove the lane, and flushed a one-handed dunk as the buzzer sounded.

McLean drew up the game-winning play on a piece of scrap paper he obtained from the scorer's table.

Haaland's game-winning heroics earned him MVP honors.  He finished with a total of 7 points.

A year after All-Star event was cancelled because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the festivities were held at Post Falls High School for the first time.  Traditionally, North Idaho College in Coeur d'Alene hosts the yearly event, but COVID-19 restrictions forced officials to find a new venue.
