Making the transition from boys to girls this year is first year Head Coach Nels Kludt. Coach Kludt spent the past two seasons as the assistant coach for the Kamiah Kubs. This is his first head coaching gig and, boy, is he ready.

No stranger to how tough the Whitepine League is, Kludt believes his squad, who has been tremendously young the past two season, is ready to take the next step. Two seasons ago, the Kubs found themselves finishing last in the Whitepine. Last year, jumping up two spots to fifth before being eliminated by Genesee in the District playoff.

The growth has been there. Being the third head coach in three years for the Kubs, Coach Kludt looks to stabilize and build chemistry with his new team. He will be relying on the likes of Ashley Fleurchinger (PG), daughter Lacey Kludt (SG), and Chynna Wilcox (SF)to be the leaders out there. The perimeter is set for Kamiah. The concern is inside, ball movement, improving outside shooting, and rebounding.

Coach Kludt believes his team is a strong defensive team, but must improve rebounding to not allow second chance opportunities. This will be done together not relying on one or two players to accomplish the task. Once the rebound is secured, increasing offensive ball movement is the priority. Ball movement will increase the offensive opportunities including the outside shot.

Being the third couch in three years would bring concern to most coaches, but Coach Kludt is excited about the overall attitude of his players and the willingness to do whatever it takes to get better, no matter what the process is.

“This year, we are looking to break (down) the barrier between competing and winning,” says first year Coach Kludt.

And that they will look to do. The game that most intrigues Kub fans will be the non-conference battle against rival Orofino on Nov 28 and Jan 3.
