The Ririe Bulldogs girls basketball program is nothing short of a 2A powerhouse in Idaho. But the architect of that powerhouse won't be returning to the sidelines in 2019-2020.

Damien Smith, a 2001 graduate of Ririe High School who led the Bulldogs to seven straight state tournament berths and four state championship game appearances, resigned Wednesday as head coach.

Smith, who accumulated 195 wins in his 12-year coaching career at Ririe, also resigned as principal and athletic director of Ririe High School. He has accepted a position in Lyman, Wyoming as the new superintendent of Uinta County School District #6.

"I am leaving the cupboard full and will truly miss Ririe," said Smith.

He helped the Bulldogs secure five district championships in his time on the sidelines along with five state tournament trophies, including one third-place, three runner-up, and the 2017 2A state championship.

Prior to serving as the head girls basketball coach, Smith spent time as the junior varsity boys head coach at Ririe and the freshman boys bench boss at Shelley.

Ririe went 20-6 this past season. The Lady Bulldogs lose five seniors from the roster, but return three-year varsity team member Indee Williams to what will be a younger squad.

A search for Smith's replacement will begin immediately.
