Clark Fork In Danger Of Dropping Football

The hits just keep on coming to 1A Division-II 8-man football in Idaho.

Over the summer, we broke the news that North Star League member Mullan was dropping their football program due to low numbers. Back in May, we reported that former 1A 11-man powerhouse Mackay would only be playing a JV schedule in 2015, again because of numbers.

Today, the Clark Fork Wampus Cats announced via their Twitter (@clarkforkhigh) and Facebook pages that unless more kids turn out for football this fall, they may be forced to cancel their season.

"Football practice has started and with only 9 kids so far, we would like to see more participate or we might have to cancel the season," the statement said.

The Wampus Cats went 4-5 last season in the newly created White Star League, a football-only conference comprised of 1AD2 schools in Districts 1 and 2. That league was comprised of eight members last year - and could be down to six should Clark Fork be forced to cancel their season.

Clark Fork High School's enrollment count in November 2014 was at 51 students, but dropped to 46 students in March of 2015. Outside of the participating numbers issue is another potential problem: required practice time.

The Idaho High School Activities Association stipulates that any player who anticipates playing in a jamboree or interscholastic event must first complete 10 total practices before becoming eligible. What does that mean? It means that Clark Fork needs to find additional players... and they need to find them fast.

Any Clark Fork High School students who are interested in joining the team should contact head coach Brian Arthun at brian.arthun@lposd.org.
