Team Preview:

After eight seasons as junior varsity coach for Kamiah boys, Aaron Skinner takes over as head coach at fellow 1A Division I White Pine League school Clearwater Valley in Kooskia.

"I am honestly excited about every aspect of this year's team," Skinner said.

"We have youth, ability and intelligence -- three factors that will carry a ballclub a long ways."

Back from last year's 6-14 squad for Clearwater Valley are Trey Pfefferkorn, a 5-6 sophomore guard; Tyler Palmer, a 5-8 senior guard; Kamm Mangun, a 6-4 sophomore center; Cody Morrow, a 5-10 forward; and Keiran Owens, a 6-4 sophomore center.

"Our strengths (on offense) are our quickness and intelligence," said Skinner, who said shooting and post-up ability are two targeted areas for improvement.
Defensively, the Rams' strength is "quickness and speed up and down the floor," Skinner said.

Clearwater Valley won a state title as recently as 2011.
T
he "X-factor" to Clearwater Valley's season this year, Skinner said, is "just sticking with it. Due to our youth, we are going to have growing pains. These are long seasons and we just need to stay focused on our goals as a team. As long as we get buy-in from the players, we will be just fine."

Asked why he enjoys coaching high school basketball, Skinner responded, "It's rewarding to watch these young athletes learn and grow throughout the season, knowing that you were a part of it."

Skinner said Clearwater Valley is the best place to coach because "the administration and the fan base has always been second to none. The school is full of pride and the community backing for the sporting events makes for an exciting atmosphere."
