Meadows Valley welcomes back the girls’ basketball program this year. It’s a unique situation, but first-year Head Coach Lindsay Szybura is glad to have enough girls to field a team.
“This is the first year in two years that we have had a girls’ basketball team,” Szybura said. “What I like about my team is the excitement my girls have for the game and having a team this year.”

The Mountaineers team consists of two freshmen that were members of the middle school team last year. Two sophomores that played in middle school, but didn’t play last year, and a junior and senior that played on the boy’s team last year.

The two veterans are senior Taylor Slettum and junior Courtney Day, and Szybura thinks the two have done a fantastic job in leading the others.

Szybura has been impressed with the team’s enthusiasm and willingness to help each other as a team.

“We’re a young team, we have two upperclassmen that have assumed strong leadership roles and I’m excited to see what happens to come together,” Szybura said. Even though we have a small group of girls they are good girls and I enjoy coaching them every day.

Since the Mountaineers haven’t had a girls’ team for a few years, Szybura is looking forward to their first home game. The community is ready to show their support and she anticipates there will be a healthy crowd for their first game back on their home court.

“Our long term goal, of not only our team but our district, is to develop a girls’ basketball program,” Szybura said. “We have a lot of involvement from the students and community at the younger levels and I am excited to see what that brings.
