Team Preview

The Vikings have been regulars at the Idaho Center in Nampa each February for the past decade.

Coeur d'Alene has qualified for the state 5A tournament each of the last 10 seasons. Eight times, the Vikings played in the championship game and four times they won it.

Making it back there this year could be quite the monumental task.

Coeur d'Alene lost all five starters and its top reserve from last year's 23-2 squad, which won the state title for the fourth time in the last seven years.

Gone are four players who are now playing in college -- Sydney Williams (University of San Diego), Sara Chalich (Carroll College), Brittany Tackett (Lewis-Clark State) and Kayli Matheson (Columbia Basin College) -- and two others that could have played in Sydni Parker and Madison Sumner.
Back are three reserves who saw limited action last year -- junior guard Emily Callahan, junior forward Maddy Scholwinski and junior guard Baylie Miller.

The strength of this year's team is "we work as a cohesive unit," said Dale Poffenroth, in his 11th season as Vikings coach. "We will work hard to play solid man-to-man (defense) with Baylie Miller and Samantha Hill drawing the opponent's best players."

He said improving on the previous season's offense and defense "will be a difficult task."
