The landscape of Lighthouse Christian Lions girls basketball is similar to where it was two seasons ago.

A strong sophomore class would go on to lead that group to the first state tournament in school history, with the team making their presence felt while there.

Now, in 2015, a new group of younger players will be asked to step into roles left vacant with the graduations of point guard Parris Gomez and interior presence Jackie van Vliet.

Leading the way for the new-look Lions will be another Gomez, Chloe, a sophomore who will be the primary ball-handler this season.

“Our offensive strengths will be working as a team and having Allie Brandsma back after an ACL injury,” said Head Coach Tia Standlee. “Her and Chloe Gomez are ready to step up and lead the team.”

For a Lighthouse Christian squad that held a height advantage nightly with van Vliet, the key will be to protect the interior on defense and find some inside scoring on the other end.

“Allie Brandsma, Chloe Gomez, Trudy Millenkamp and Caitlyn Gaskill will be quick on the ball and Kristen Vander Stelt, Stacey Wang and Faith Andreasen will cover the key,” added Standlee.

Standlee mentioned multiple times that the x-factor for the coming season will be working together as one.

“We are young and a fresh team,” she said. “I’m excited to watch the girls grow as a team.”

While the Lions did lose the 213 blocks of van Vliet and outstanding production on both ends from Parris Gomez, the newcomers should be able to help Lighthouse Christian compete in the 1AD2 North Side Conference.

The conference could have a changing of the guard at the top, with Dietrich losing back-to-back 1AD2 State Player of the Year Jacey Shaw, although the Blue Devils return plenty of talent, led by dominant post player Katee Hubert. Richfield is the defending state champion and Castleford returns plenty of talent.
