Team Preview

Written by: David Bashore

New Plymouth had a banner season in 2014-15, going 20-5 with a strong performance toward the end of the season. It hopes that 2015-16 won’t feature too big of a drop-off with the group it has returning.

The Pilgrims return six seniors out of the 10 on the roster, led by point guard Courtney Butler and guard-forward duo Josie Thurman and Dusty Goff. Those three and the other seniors will be called upon to lead a line that lost its top two scorers and leading rebounder from last season.

Offensively, New Plymouth will lean on its speed and basketball IQ, while working on shooting percentage. Defensively, the Pilgrims want to lock down and be opportunistic in forcing turnovers and turning those into easy baskets. Size is also an issue so rebounding will be a point of emphasis on both ends of the floor.

Longtime coach Denise Oliver says coaching this group of kids is rewarding because of their effort and competitiveness. She hopes that will pair with the team’s strengths to give them another successful season.
