Team Preview

Written by: David Bashore

For Salmon River, 2014-15 was a building season. It was the first season for the Savages girls basketball team since 2011 due to a lack of numbers. Now, the team is poised to potentially break out in 2015-16 as the players have a year under their belt and add some more youthful talent to continue to build to something special.

Salmon River returns first-team all-conference point guard Payton Branstetter and adds another first-team all-conference player in Maddy Tucker, who transferred from Emmett. Also back for another season is second-team all-conference player Sarah Laritz.

The Savages will look to run a guard-heavy, quick tempo offense centered around Tucker, Branstetter and newcomer Chevelle Shepherd. Laritz and Ryan Simonson will look to complement that guard game with an interior presence. Another year of ball skill and added competitiveness should be pivotal for a squad that is still learning the game.

Defensively Salmon River will bring a lunch-bucket with the same athletic talents: quickness, competitive fire and tenacity. This group is tough and should be able to diversify its options now that the returners all have experience – last year first-time basketball players had to start as the program got back off the ground.

Salmon River should be able to play a quicker tempo and utilize its passion and intensity. That has to be measured with a steady balance of patience as the team finds its feet. As long as everything jells at the right time, things should be looking up for the Savages this season.
