A young Idaho City football team had its share of growing pains in 2016, with optimism that those struggles will lead to improvement in the new campaign.

This team is still not as experienced as many in conference play, with just four seniors listed as returners by Head Coach Jason Roeber.

As the season wore on last year for the Wildcats, plenty of improvement was shown on the offensive end. That will need to continue to turn around the fortunes from the 1-8 record of a year ago.

Senior Jake Standerwick should be one of the leaders on each side of the ball from the running back and linebacker positions.

On the offensive side of things, multiple other players should be key contributors including Glen Fairbanks at tight end, Breadan Erbe or Kaleb Severns at quarterback and a line featuring plenty of options for who to fill in at any point.

"Our offense is highly coachable and they made great strides last year," said Roeber.

He acknowledges though that to take the next step Idaho City needs to get some more points on the board.

The middle of the defense should be the strength on the other end of the ball.

"The defense will be led this year by our two linebackers Jake Standerwick and Aaron Ostrom," said Roeber. "[We need to] be more physical."

When trying to get the program back on the upward swing after a couple of what could be considered down years, the coach acknowledges the journey will not be an easy one.

"There will be no easy games on our schedule this year. We will have to take each game seriously, work hard and learn each week."

The right mental mindset is being built by this team to make good things happen down the road.

"This is a great group of kids that know how to work and are hungry for some success," said Roeber.

The Wildcats kick off the 2017 season with a home battle with the Butte County Pirates on August 25.
