When accepting the position as a head football anywhere one of the first things to accomplish is to establish the culture you want within that program.

For new Timberline coach Ian Smart the task of turning around the fortunes from what was a 2-7 mark a year ago is an exciting one.

"I love the idea of getting to work to create a strong football culture," he added.

One of the things that makes the Timberline position appealing is the fact that just two years ago the team put together a 7-win season, meaning winning sooner than some expect might not be too far out of the realm of possibility.

With an opener looming against perennial power Emmett, the challenge will begin right away.

"Let's just start with game one," said Smart. "Emmett is a great team and a great test right out of the gate."

A couple of key talents return on the offensive side of the ball, including running back Jacob Pinkney and receivers Connor Riddle and Toran Zimmerman. Finding the best option to get them the ball will be important, along with stabilizing an offensive front that has potential if everyone can stay healthy.

"We are going to try a establish a strong, dynamic offense," said Smart. "We want to be very consistent. We don’t want to have peaks and valleys."

Gus Kormylo and Peyton Mills are a couple of the pieces that are expected to form the offensive front.

Defensively the Wolves have Dylan Herberg back to anchor the unit from his linebacker post, with Ed Osterberger manning the strong safety position and multiple players that might need to go two-ways to fill in the pieces, at least early on for Timberline.

"We want to be ferocious on defense. We want to make sure we are sound, but want to be swarming," said Smart.

It's never easy in the 5A SIC, however with the teams at the top experiencing high roster turnover, the door could be open for teams like Timberline to creep in the right direction this season.
