It wasn't too long ago that the Hagerman Pirates were one of the premier teams in the 1AD1 classification, winning state titles in 2011 and 2013. Since that time the football program has struggled to get back to the same level of success, but there is optimism that an improvement from a 3-win mark a year ago could be in store this time around.

In 2016 the Pirates hung tough with teams including Grace, Challis and Glenns Ferry, along with picking up wins against Castleford, Shoshone and Murtaugh.

Now the key for Hagerman is to try to get back above the .500 mark.

Gone is a senior class from a year ago including quarterback Lee Arterburn, lineman Jarred Douville and running back Ashton Ruffing.

The departure of that senior class opens the door for new talent to come in and make an impact in what is again a tough 1AD1 Snake River Conference to string together wins in.

Wide receiver Terrell Wise and running back Caleb Owsley should be two of the key playmaking options on offense, where Hagerman will look to find a new quarterback to replace Arterburn.

With quality players having graduated from throughout the conference the door is a little more open than it has been recently to get into the top three and secure a playoff spot. It will be an uphill climb to get there for the Pirates, however a four or five win season, and potentially more than that, is well within the realm of possibility.

To begin the 2017 campaign Hagerman will take on the Castleford Wolves on the road before a road conference affair in week two against the rebuilding Glenns Ferry Pilots and first year head coach Jake Shrum.
